Golf in Germany

Germany has more than 600 golf courses and the number of golfers is fast approaching half a million.

Both in Germany’s metropolitan areas and surrounding regions there are outstanding golf courses. The course at Gut Kaden, 50 km north of Hamburg, and the Club Zur Vahr course in Bremen, are two of the most famous.

Great golf courses are the Klostermannshof course in Niederkassel in the heart of Rhineland, Hohen Wieschendorf by the Baltic Sea on a peninsula between Lübeck and Wismar, the Motzsener See Club in Brandenburg, and the Augsburg Golf Club. But golf in Germany is not just for the professionals, there are hundreds of courses designed to cater for golfers of all abilities and needs. Exploring Germany’s golf courses is a good way of seeing more of the country and its natural beauty.

An important factor affecting your enjoyment of golf in Germany may be the degree to which you plan ahead.

Golf in Germany is still the preserve of an elite, and there are no public courses, green fees are sometimes high, and Germany is the only European country where you need a license before you can play. The license may cost several hundreds of euros, and require attendance of a five-day training course. For this reason it is vital to get a handicap certificate before you leave for Germany, and it would also be a good idea to contact the clubs in advance to check regulations and green fees. At many clubs, it is furthermore obligatory to book ahead.

Bavaria has the highest concentration of golf courses in Germany, and the former East Germany has the fewest.
