A resort is a complex used for relaxation or recreation, attracting visitors for holidays and vacations. Resorts are typically located out of town in areas of great natural scenery, and typically a resort offers food, drink, lodging, sports, entertainment, and shopping within the facility so that guest do not need to leave the facility throughout the stay. Commonly these facilities are of a higher quality than would be expected if one were to stay at a hotel or eat in a town's restaurants.
Golf resorts are resorts that cater specifically to the sport of golf, and include access to one or more golf courses. Golf resorts typically provide golf packages that provide guests with all greens and cart fees, range balls, luxury accommodation and meals. Usually golf resorts also offer other nature based activities such as backpacking, fishing as well as health spas, beauty clinics etc.
Accommodation in a golf resort may take form of hotel-like rooms or private golf villas/apartments.
It is possible for golfers to purchase vacation packages for some of the finest golf resorts and golf courses in the world. Most countries in the world now hosts golf resorts of one type or the other.
Around the world golf resort clubs have emerged. If you buy a share in one of these clubs you purchase a right to spend a certain number of weeks at one or more of the golf resorts included in the scheme. Some of the golf resort clubs are arranged as a kind of time share, where you buy the right of use for a number of weeks, while other schemes are arranged as a fractional ownership scheme, where you own a fraction of a house/apartment at a golf resort, and therefore also has the right to use the house/apartment a certain time each year, depending of the fraction you have bought. These rights can then be swapped with others, so you can stay at different golf resorts.
